Shingle Roofing Systems

Shingle Roofing Systems

Asphalt shingle roofing systems are the most widely used in South Florida thanks to affordability, versatility, and range of design options.

Why Asphalt Shingles Work in Florida

Today’s architectural and designer shingles are engineered to withstand high winds, intense UV exposure, and heavy rainfall. Many products meet or exceed Florida Building Code (FBC) requirements and can be rated for High Velocity Hurricane Zones (HVHZ) when installed with the proper fastening systems.

That said, asphalt shingles are lighter than other roofing systems, which makes professional installation especially important.

New Construction vs. Roof Replacement

New Construction:

Asphalt shingles are a popular choice for new homes due to cost efficiency, fast installation, and flexibility in color and style. Garabar works closely with builders to make sure the roofing system is installed in compliance with current municipality building requirements from day one.

Roof Replacement:

For existing homes, asphalt shingles are often replaced when the roof reaches the end of its lifespan or after storm damage. Replacement allows homeowners to upgrade to higher wind-rated products and improve overall roof performance.

Shingle roofs are often good candidates for repair when damage is isolated, such as missing shingles or localized leaks. Replacement is typically recommended when damage is widespread, the roof is aging, or repairs have become too frequent.

Common shingle roof issues:

  • Warped or missing shingles
  • Granule loss from sun exposure
  • Flashing failures around penetrations
  • Improper installation or ventilation
  • Installation blunders and code violations

Florida Building Code & Installation Standards

Garabar installs asphalt shingle roofs in accordance with the FBC, including wind uplift requirements, approved underlayments, and fastening patterns. Garabar is licensed and insured in the State of Florida as both a Roofing Contractor and a General Contractor. Our credentials are clearly shown on all contracts and company vehicles, and every installation and repair complies with Florida building codes and applicable industry standards.

Types of Shingles

3-Tab Shingles

As the most cost-effective shingles, this material is generally the thinnest of shingles and most susceptible to uplift. Their benefit lies in the cost, which can be substantially lower than other premium shingles. These products are usually warranted for up to 20 years. See GAF’s Marquis® shingle product line.

Dimensional or Architectural Shingles

This shingle is a thicker premium shingle shaped similarly to 3-tabs with warranties of up to 40 or 50 years. Dimensional shingles cost more than 3-tabs, however, one can expect a longer product life and better resistance to wind. See GAF’s Timberline® product line.

Designer Shingles

Designer shingles have the best uplift and thickness of the three shingle types. While they are installed in a similar way to regular shingles, they have the appearance of flat tile or slate roofing. With up to a limited lifetime warranty, these shingles are designed to withstand winds up to 130 mph. See GAF’s Camelot® product line.
